THRIVE

A college student centric mental health + wellness application by students, for students.

Our team wanted to design a solution that allows the students at Georgia Tech to avail mental health help in a comfortable and private environment.

We hope to see design a product that can have an impact on those students that are not clinically diagnosed with a serious condition, but those who are suffering from phases of depression, anxiety, paranoia, etc. Since we are not certified therapists or doctors, we hope that our product simply pushes the student towards realizing that they may have a problem and becoming proactive about seeking the right form of help before the problem progresses. Our goal is to find ways for students that are seeking mental health help to receive this help in a private setting to ensure that they actually follow through with the suggested recommendations. We want them to feel safe, comfortable and reduce the element of fear or anticipated judgment from others through our product/service. We also want to ensure that the product is accessible to them at all times of the day and provide them with solutions that are tailored to be within their comfort zone.

TASK ANALYSIS

Chris is a second year computer science student at Georgia Tech. After spending his first year at home attending school virtually due to the pandemic, he is very eager to finally be on campus and make new friends. However, as fall semester goes on, Chris feels more stressed day by day. Every other week he has exams and projects to finish, and when he does not have major assignments due some week, Chris finds himselfs catching up with other classes instead. Chris feels like he barely has time for himself to do things that make him happy, such as making new friends at social events and working out at the gym. Eventually, Chris finds it harder to get out of bed each day and spends a lot of time sleeping, since he feels as though he has lost all motivation and his initial excitement to start the semester on campus.

One day, Chris hears about an app called ‘ThriveTech’ from the school newsletter. As he reads the descriptions about ThriveTech and the possibility that it could potentially improve his lifestyle and mental health, Chris decides to give ThriveTech a try. On the same day, Chris downloads the app, signed up, and took the initial survey. His survey result came back and was shown that his top priorities to be time management, mental health, and social life. The next day, Chris does his first morning check-in and picks ‘studying’ as well as ‘social’ as his goals for the day. After selecting his goals, ThriveTech shows a screen of suggestions tailored for Chris; some suggestions for him for the day include ‘making a quizlet’ and some school events that are happening that day and the week of. Chris spends his day making flashcards on Quizlet and studying them. In the evening after he’s done with his work, Chris decides to show up at his floor social event, where the residents of the same floor of his hall get together to play games, have snacks, and socialize; Chris is able to finally meet those who live on the same floor as him. Before bed, Chris does his evening check-in on ThriveTech and rates the activities he has done and how he feels.

Gradually, as Chris checks-in with ThriveTech every day, he finally feels as though he is himself again. Chris is now up to date with every class, friends with many of his neighbors and classmates, and he even got back to his workout routine. He feels like his lifestyle has improved noticeably since started using ThriveTech as a daily assistance, even his friends told him that Chris seems to be more positive and energetic than before!
